This chromolithograph follows one enslaved man's journey from the plantation to the battlefield, a progression the Library's title makes explicit. It is attributed to James Queen and drawn after Henry Louis Stephens, and it dates to about 1863, the year the Emancipation Proclamation took effect and Black men began enlisting in Union regiments in significant numbers. Color printing of this kind was costly for its time, so the image likely aimed at a broad public with a message about liberty. The print was later shown in the exhibition *American Visions of Liberty and Freedom* at the Virginia Historical Society.
