Benjamin Sterling Turner, born enslaved in North Carolina, is the man this sheet's title points toward. He later won a seat in Congress from Alabama, though in the House rather than the Senate. Beside him stand Frederick Douglass and William Wells Brown, both formerly enslaved and both prominent abolitionists and writers, who represent the earlier struggle against slavery. The lithograph was published in New York around 1883 by E.E. Murray & Co. and later hand-colored, and it reflects a period when Black political leaders during Reconstruction were still a recent and widely discussed development.
