Soldiers of the 25th Infantry posed in buffalo robes at Fort Keogh, Montana, a detail that sets this group apart from more formal regimental portraits. The 25th was one of the four all-Black regiments created after the Civil War, and its men were known as Buffalo Soldiers, a name that later came to describe the Black cavalry and infantry units of the postwar army. Fort Keogh, near the Yellowstone River, was a frontier post where such soldiers guarded the region during the 1880s and 1890s. The verso identifies the photographer as Chr. Barthelmess of Fort Keogh, so the picture was made locally rather than in a city studio.
