This cabinet-format portrait shows the band of the 803rd Pioneer Infantry, an African American unit photographed in 1919, the year after the Armistice ended the First World War. Pioneer infantry regiments were tasked with construction, road building, and other labor behind the front, so their bands often played for morale during long periods away from combat. Military bands were among the most visible roles open to Black soldiers at the time, and the musicians' instruments and uniforms in this gelatin silver print offer a glimpse of that service. The photograph comes from the Gladstone collection at the Library of Congress.
