The title, *Camp Lincoln*, places this 1897 cabinet card at a specific military camp, and the record ties the sitters to African American military service. Cabinet cards like this were a common studio format in the 1890s, often exchanged with family or kept in albums. The decade was also when Black units such as the Ninth and Tenth Cavalry and the Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth Infantry served in the regular army, many of them at frontier posts in the West. Gelatin silver prints were the standard for commercial portraits of the time, so the uniforms and poses show how these soldiers chose to present themselves at the close of the century.
