The name in the title sets this sketch apart: a pencil drawing of a man called Dick, made on May 6, 1863, as the army returned to camp. That was the day Gen. Joseph Hooker pulled his forces back across the Rappahannock River, closing out the Chancellorsville campaign, which had opened in late April with a bold flanking movement and ended in withdrawal. The artist worked quickly in the field, so the drawing captures an individual during a large military moment rather than a posed portrait. It carries only the initials E.F., and little else about its maker is recorded.
