Published by the Baltimore firm Metcalf & Clark, this lithograph commemorates a celebration held in that city on May 19, 1870. The Fifteenth Amendment, which bars the denial of voting rights on account of race, had been ratified earlier that year, and communities across the North held parades and gatherings to mark it, with Black citizens taking a prominent part. The print presents the amendment as the culmination of a long struggle, and its title frames the event as the final accomplishment of the African race in America.
