Sissieretta Jones performed under the nickname "Black Patti," a comparison to the celebrated Italian-born soprano Adelina Patti, and this poster puts that billing front and center. Jones sang for audiences across the United States and performed at the White House for President Benjamin Harrison in 1892. By the late 1890s she led her own touring company, the Black Patti Troubadours, and posters like this one promoted her concerts and the medals associated with her name. The lithograph was printed in New York and shows how Black performers marketed their talents to wide audiences at a time when segregation limited where they could appear.
