Charles White's 1951 lithograph presents Frederick Douglass, the formerly enslaved Maryland-born abolitionist, writer, and orator who became one of the most influential voices against slavery in the nineteenth century. White, a Chicago-born artist who spent much of his career portraying Black life and history, made portraits like this one during a period when he was turning to notable African Americans as subjects. Douglass's 1845 autobiography and his newspaper, *The North Star*, shaped his public standing, and the print invites viewers to consider how a twentieth-century artist chose to represent a figure whose words and example still carried weight a century after his death.
