Inscribed in ink in the lower right with the dedication "For Ben," this color screen print by Romare Bearden ties the work to one particular person. Made in 1976, *Roots Odyssey* comes from the period when Bearden was drawing on Homer's epic and on his own upbringing in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Harlem, linking ancient myth with African American life. Bearden, one of the most influential collagists of the twentieth century, used layered shapes and rich color to suggest figures moving through memory and history. The print was later shown in *American Treasures* at the Library of Congress in 2006 and 2007.
