The Garden City Quartette is named in this color lithograph, which promotes a production of *Uncle Tom's Cabin* and was printed by the Courier Litho. Co. of Buffalo, New York, around 1899. Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 novel had become one of the most performed stories on the American stage, and by the 1890s traveling companies often staged it as a melodrama that mixed sentiment, music and comic scenes. The subject heading also flags the stereotyped portrayals of African Americans that shaped many of these productions, a point worth keeping in mind when looking at the sheet today.
