The striking detail here is the pairing: a cakewalk contest advertised under the title *Uncle Tom's Cabin*, Harriet Beecher Stowe's 1852 antislavery novel, which was adapted for the stage in many versions. The cakewalk grew out of dances performed by enslaved African Americans who parodied the formal manners of white plantation society. By the late 1800s, minstrel and vaudeville shows had absorbed it, often presenting it in exaggerated form for white audiences. The phrase "Our Colored Exclusives" is a promotional claim about the Black performers, so the poster is worth reading critically for how it packaged Black culture as entertainment.
