Distinguished Colored Men, oval portrait lithograph poster

Share

Its title, *Distinguished Colored Men*, is the detail that sets it apart, and it shows how the picture wanted to be read: as a showcase of achievement at a time when Black Americans were more often drawn as caricatures. Oval portrait frames were a familiar way to honor notable people, and lithography let a publisher reproduce a group of portraits cheaply and in quantity. Prints like this could hang in homes, schools, and churches, offering an alternative to the demeaning imagery common in the same period. The formal, evenly spaced arrangement of the sitters gives the sheet a deliberate dignity worth noticing.
