Troopers of the Ninth U.S. Cavalry, the "famous Colored Regiment" named in the title, are shown drawing their sabers in this stereo card published in New York around 1898. The Ninth was one of the Black cavalry regiments formed after the Civil War, known as Buffalo Soldiers, and it had spent years on frontier posts in the West before the Spanish-American War sent it to Cuba. That July, its troopers fought alongside Theodore Roosevelt's Rough Riders at San Juan Hill. Stereographs like this one, viewed through a stereoscope, brought war news and patriotic scenes into American parlors.
