Hoeing rice by hand was a steady task on South Carolina plantations, and this stereograph from the Keystone View Company of Meadville, Pennsylvania, around 1904, presents it as a scene for home viewers. Rice grew along the Carolina coast and tidal rivers for generations, and the crop depended on Black workers whose skill with flooded fields and dikes drew on West African farming knowledge. Stereocards like this one were sold widely and viewed through parlor stereoscopes, so the picture reached audiences who rarely saw such labor firsthand.
