Rows of women in Women's Army Corps uniforms sit stacked on bleachers, their caps and jackets giving the scene a crisp, uniform look. The corps was created in 1942 so women could fill noncombat jobs and free men for combat duty, and by the end of the war well over 100,000 women had served. Black women enlisted in significant numbers but were largely placed in segregated units and faced limits on assignments and training. Photographs like this one show a service that brought women from many backgrounds together, even as racial barriers remained.
