Cinque, the Mende man named in this 1971 color screen print by Romare Bearden, led the 1839 revolt aboard the Spanish slave ship *La Amistad* off the coast of Cuba. After the ship was seized near Long Island, New York, the case reached the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled in 1841 that the captives had been illegally enslaved and were free. Bearden, best known for his collages of Black life in America, turned to this episode of armed resistance and legal victory. The print is signed in pencil.
