The title "Character" was written by the National Photo Company on the negative or its sleeve, and the Library of Congress has not verified it, so treat it as a clue rather than a fact. The glass negative dates from roughly 1918 to 1920, when the company's Washington, D.C. studio was recording the city's streets, businesses, and residents in large numbers. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library in 1947. Look also for the faint streaks and blemishes caused by the gradual breakdown of the original coating, which are part of the object's physical history.
