Crown Point is a basalt headland rising about 700 feet above the Columbia River gorge east of Portland, and the Vista House built on its summit gave travelers one of the best overlooks on the Columbia Gorge Scenic Highway. The stone observatory, designed by Edgar M. Lazarus and dedicated in 1918, was meant to serve as a rest stop for motorists on the new highway, which had been developed to showcase the river's scenery. This c1916 view captures the gorge just before the building was completed, when the landscape was still being opened up to automobile tourism. Look for how the river bends below the cliffs, a reminder of why the site drew so many visitors.
