Few lighthouses on the Oregon coast stood as far from land as Tillamook Rock, a basalt outcrop roughly a mile offshore that crews had to supply by boat and hoist materials up the rock to build. Its keepers, who were often isolated for long stretches, nicknamed it "Terrible Tilly" for the storms that broke over it. This c1891 view by S. B. Crow, a photographer working in Astoria, shows the station as it stood not long after it began operating in 1881. It is a useful record of the difficult setting that made the light so remarkable.
