A lighthouse stands alone on a rocky islet, with waves breaking hard against the stone around its base. Coastal towers like this were built to mark dangerous reefs and narrow channels, often on sites too exposed for easy access. Keepers and their supply boats had to contend with rough water much of the year, and the tower's light, usually fed by oil lamps in earlier decades, guided ships past hazards that could otherwise wreck them in a storm.
