A lighthouse stands alone on a rocky island at the mouth of a harbor, its tower rising above a low tangle of stone and surf. Lighthouses like this one were built to guide ships past hidden reefs and into safe water, and photographs of them from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries often record the isolation of such stations, where keepers and their families lived far from the nearest town. The black-and-white format strips away color but emphasizes the hard edges of the masonry, the pale sky, and the dark water breaking against the rocks. Worth noticing is how the tower and its outbuildings seem to hold the whole island together, a small human outpost against the open sea.
