The Charleston Light stands on Sullivan's Island, at the entrance to Charleston Harbor in South Carolina, and it has guided ships into that channel for well over a century. The tower was completed in 1962 and is the tallest brick lighthouse in the United States, a fact that gives its slender silhouette a particular presence in a black and white view. Its predecessors on the island were lost to storms and shifting sand, which makes the current structure a useful reminder of how hard it has been to keep navigational lights standing on this low, exposed coast.
