Set on one of the rocky Isles of Shoals off the New Hampshire and Maine coast, White Island Light guided vessels past dangerous ledges for generations. This c1888 print, numbered 156 and credited to Boston photographer H.G. Peabody, pairs the tower with the keeper's dwelling and a sailboat on the water nearby. The picture shows how the light station sat exposed on bare island ground, and the sailboat is a reminder that the island's isolated life depended on the shipping it helped guide.
