The subject is Eagle Island Light, a fourth-order lighthouse on a rocky island in Penobscot Bay, Maine, which guided vessels through the bay's crowded approaches to Castine and Bangor. Fourth-order lenses were small optics used at minor stations, so the light marked a modest but useful point on a coast where fog and ledges made navigation hazardous. The photograph was apparently pasted into an album, probably one assembled between 1884 and 1891 to document lighthouses along the Maine coast. Later the island became associated with Arctic explorer Robert E. Peary, whose family summered there, which gives the station a second place in American history.
