Minot's Ledge Light stands on a rocky reef about two miles off Cohasset, on the south shore of Massachusetts Bay, where the sea breaks over the ledge in heavy weather. The first lighthouse on the site was completed in 1860, but a storm destroyed it in 1851 before it was finished... Let me correct that: the original light was completed in 1860 and was toppled by waves in April 1851 during construction, so the replacement, an iron-framed tower raised after that, was built in the late 1850s and first lit in 1860. Its exposed position made construction and keeping the light dangerous work for the keepers, who were sometimes stranded for weeks by rough seas. The tower's survival through many storms made it a well-known symbol of the bay's dangerous coast.
