Few lighthouses on the Rhode Island shore stand as close to the water as the Watch Hill light, which guards the approach to Little Narragansett Bay at the state's southwestern corner. This 1905 view by L. M. Cobb keeps the tower and the keeper's house in one frame, a reminder that these stations were working homes as well as navigation aids. Watch Hill's light dates to the early 1800s, and by the time of this photograph, the keepers and their families were tied to the station's daily routine of tending the lamp and maintaining the grounds.
