Few views of the Pacific coast's naval installations from this period survive, which makes this 1872 view of the light at Mare Island worth a closer look. The island, in San Pablo Bay near Vallejo, held the Navy's first shipyard on the West Coast, established in 1854, and its light guided vessels through the channel to the yard's docks. Lighthouses like this one were practical markers, built to keep ships off shoals in the bay's shifting waters, and their stark, functional forms reflect that purpose. Look at the structure's setting against open water to see how the light fit into the working waterfront of the period.
