Set in San Pablo Bay near Vallejo, Mare Island was home to the first U.S. Navy shipyard on the Pacific coast, and its light helped guide vessels past the island's shallow flats and busy waterfront. The station served pilots and naval traffic in a bay where tides and currents shift constantly. A photograph from 1872 captures a working coastline in its early years, when lighthouses were still the main way ships found safe passage through the region's channels. Notice how the light stands in a wide, open setting, a reminder of how much of the Bay Area's shoreline was still lightly built.
