Old Field Point Light stands on the north shore of Long Island, at the tip of a headland above Long Island Sound in Suffolk County. The lighthouse was built in 1868 to guide vessels past the rocky shoals of the Sound, and its tower and keeper's dwelling reflect the mid-nineteenth-century style of the federal lighthouse service. Like many stations of its era, it depended on a resident keeper and his family to tend the lamp through nightly watches and storms. The tower's brick construction and its position on a bluff make it a familiar landmark for boaters crossing the Sound.
