Barbers Point Light stands on the low, dry southwestern coast of Oahu, where the island's reefs and shoals made the approach to Honolulu's harbor hazardous for ships. This photograph, taken between 1930 and 1940, shows the station as the U.S. Lighthouse Service maintained it in that period, when the federal agency oversaw aids to navigation across the territory. Hawaii's lighthouses were vital to the islands' shipping, which depended on steamers and sailing vessels carrying cargo and passengers across the Pacific. The print offers a useful record of how these coastal stations looked before the Lighthouse Service was folded into the Coast Guard in 1939.
