Diamond Head Lighthouse stands at the foot of the volcanic crater that gives Honolulu one of its best-known landmarks, guarding the sea approach to the harbor from the island's southeast shore. Built in the late 1910s, the light was run by the federal lighthouse service, which maintained aids to navigation across the Pacific territories. This print, dated between 1930 and 1940, shows the station during the years when such coastal lights were still key to shipping traffic. It is a useful record of how the federal service presented its outposts in Hawaii before the Coast Guard took over the lighthouse system.
