Gay Head Light stands on the clay cliffs at the western tip of Martha's Vineyard, where the colored bluffs of Aquinnah rise above the Atlantic and the Vineyard Sound. The light was first lit in 1856, and its tower sits beside the keeper's house, which together made a working station for the men who tended the lamp. Much of the pictured complex is a reminder of how isolated such posts were, since keepers and their families depended on the sea and on supply boats for nearly everything. The cliffs themselves were later relocated, a reminder that the coastline here has never stayed still.
