A child races along a path past a lighthouse painted in alternating bands, with the keeper's house standing close beside the tower. Such stripes, often called day marks, helped sailors identify a particular light from the sea, so the paint was a navigational tool as much as a decoration. Keepers and their families usually lived on site, tending the lamp through the night and keeping the grounds, which is why the dwelling sits so near the tower. Pictures that include a child tend to show the everyday life that lighthouse service depended on, not just the structure itself.
