Few lighthouses wear the streamlined, geometric styling of Art Deco, so a white tower of this kind stands out among the traditional brick and stone towers that dominate the subject. Its smooth lines and stepped or rounded profile reflect the 1920s and 1930s, when architects applied the movement's modern forms to public buildings, including coastal structures. Built on a cliff, the tower was both a navigation aid and a landmark, its pale surface chosen to show clearly against sky and water. Look closely at the sculpted detailing and the way the form meets the rocky headland.
