Barber's Point Light stands on the southwestern coast of Oahu, where ships approaching Honolulu needed a clear navigational marker. The photograph, dated by the Library of Congress to between 1930 and 1940, shows the light during the years when the U.S. Lighthouse Service, part of the Department of Commerce, maintained such beacons across the territory. Hawaii had been a U.S. territory since 1898, and its coastal lights were part of a wider federal effort to keep Pacific shipping safe. In 1939 the Lighthouse Service was folded into the Coast Guard, ending its independent existence near the close of the decade.
