Flirtation Walk, the wooded path that curls along the bluffs above the Hudson at West Point, is the focus here, with the lighthouse standing as a landmark on the river's edge. The walk took its name from the cadets and their companions who strolled it for courtship, a tradition that clung to the spot for generations. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative dates to about 1905 and comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American places for commercial sale. The scene shows how the military academy's grounds blended with the scenic river landscape that drew visitors up the Hudson.
