Boston Light, on Little Brewster Island at the mouth of Boston Harbor, is generally recognized as the first lighthouse built within what became the United States. Massachusetts completed the stone tower in 1716 to guide ships past the rocky approaches to one of the busiest ports in British North America. British forces blew up the station in 1776 as they left Boston during the Revolution, and it was rebuilt after the war, a sign of how essential such navigation aids had become to maritime trade.
