Standing at the mouth of the Detroit River, the Detroit River Light House was built to guide ships through one of the busiest waterways on the Great Lakes. The lighthouse sits on Lake Erie's western approach, where freighters carrying iron ore, coal and grain passed through the narrow channel between Detroit and Lake Erie. Its tower and keeper's quarters reflect the nineteenth-century practice of marking hazardous shoals with steady lights and fog signals. Worth noticing is how the structure's location, rather than its size, made it essential to navigation on this crowded route.
