The Detroit River light station guarded one of the busiest waterways in the Great Lakes, where the river narrows as it feeds into Lake Erie. In 1885, steamers and schooners carrying grain, lumber, and iron ore moved through these channels in growing numbers, and a dependable light was essential for navigating the shifting shoals and crossing traffic. Keepers tended the lamp through the night, and their careful routines helped make the river one of the most closely watched passages on the lakes.
