The Detroit River Light, built in 1875 on a stone crib off the mouth of the Detroit River, guided ships through the busy water between Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie. By 1885, when this view was made, the station had become a familiar landmark for lake freighters and passenger steamers working the heavily trafficked river channel. Lighthouses of this type, set on open water rather than on shore, were built to mark shoals and channels where a fixed beacon on land would be of little use. Worth noticing is the squat, sturdy tower rising from its platform, a reminder of how much engineering went into keeping a light burning in exposed water.
