Mount Desert Rock is a small, exposed island off the coast of Maine, and its lighthouse stood as a warning to ships approaching the Gulf of Maine from the open Atlantic. This view, taken looking north, shows the station as it would have appeared to a mariner or keeper working the rocky shoreline. Lighthouses like this one were often built on remote outcrops where supply landings depended on weather, and keepers lived in isolation for long stretches. The image is a useful record of how such stations were laid out, with the tower, keepers' dwellings and outbuildings sharing a barren, wave-battered site.
