St. George's Reef Light Station sits on a rocky reef about 7 miles off the northern California coast, and this view from the southwest shows the tower and keeper's dwellings rising from water that breaks hard against the outcrop. The station was built in the late 1880s to mark one of the most dangerous stretches on the Pacific coast, where ships bound for San Francisco and Humboldt Bay had long been lost on submerged rocks. Its exposed position made construction and resupply difficult, and keepers often lived for weeks at a time cut off by weather. Notice how the lantern and buildings are set so close to the sea, a reminder of the engineering the site demanded.
