The South-West Pass lighthouse stood at the mouth of the Mississippi River, where the main channel meets the Gulf of Mexico, and it guided ships into one of the busiest ports in the country. Built on the shifting sandbars of the delta, the tower was a practical answer to a dangerous approach, since vessels had to thread a narrow, constantly changing channel to reach New Orleans. Worth noticing is how exposed the site was: the land there is low and marshy, so the structure had to be engineered to stand on unstable ground while withstanding storms off the Gulf.
