The Calcasieu light stood at the mouth of the Calcasieu River on Louisiana's Gulf Coast, a spot where shifting sandbars and a broad, shallow entrance made navigation tricky for the steamers and schooners that carried lumber, rice, and cargo in and out of Lake Charles. Lighthouses on this stretch of coast were built to mark those hazards, and their towers often served as the only fixed landmarks for miles of flat, marshy shoreline. Worth noticing in a picture like this is how little else breaks the horizon: the tower, its keeper's outbuildings, and the open sky show how isolated such stations could be in the nineteenth century.
