Trinity Shoal lies offshore in the Gulf of Mexico, so this lighthouse stood far from the coastline, built to mark a hazard where ships could run aground in open water. Offshore lights of this kind were raised on shoals and reefs to guide vessels through channels that had no natural landmarks to steer by. Their keepers faced isolation and the constant pressure of storms and hurricanes that battered the Gulf coast. Worth noticing is the structure itself, which had to stand on a foundation set into shifting sand and water.
