Cleveland's lighthouse stood on the lakefront of Lake Erie, a working beacon guiding the grain, coal and iron ore ships that crowded the harbor of a city growing fast on Great Lakes trade. Lighthouses like this one were built along the shores of the Great Lakes in the nineteenth century to mark harbor entrances and shoals, since storms on the inland seas could wreck vessels as dangerously as any ocean. Its picture-postcard look, with the tower rising above the water, makes it a useful window onto how shipping and settlement shaped the lakefront.
