Stannard's Rock, a reef far out in Lake Superior, had long been a hazard to ships before the Light-House Board built a station on it in the early 1880s. This frontispiece shows that tower as the government wanted it seen in its 1882 annual report. The image is a phototype, a photomechanical reproduction, credited to F. Gutekunst of Philadelphia, a photographer and printer. Its place at the front of the report suggests how much the Board valued the station as a showcase of its work on the Great Lakes.
