Stannard Rock Light sits roughly 22 miles from the nearest land in the middle of Lake Superior, which made it one of the most isolated lighthouses on the Great Lakes. Built on a barren reef and completed in 1882, it was raised to warn ships away from a shoal that had claimed vessels for decades. Its construction was a serious engineering effort, since crews had to work from the water in an unpredictable lake, and the tower's sturdy, tapered masonry reflects that hard-won durability. This plate records the tower as it stood when it was among the most remote beacons in the region.
