The Maplin Sand, a shifting bank at the mouth of the Thames off the Essex coast, was long feared by mariners, and this plate shows the light-house built to warn ships away from it. It is one of a numbered series of engraved plates, the kind of illustration 19th-century readers relied on to see the structures that guided coastal shipping. Lighthouses on exposed sandbanks like this one had to stand against tides, storms and shifting sand, so their design was as much an engineering question as an architectural one. The plate is worth noting for its careful rendering of the tower's form against open water, a view that tells you as much about the sea conditions as about the building itself.
